Frequently asked questions
The things people ask us most about life on the road.
Who are Thomsons In Tow?
Thomsons In Tow is Ash and Iain — a family of four from Perth, Western Australia, travelling around Australia with two young kids in a Cadillac RV caravan and a Toyota Land Cruiser 300.
Where are you based and where do you travel?
We're based in Perth, Western Australia, and travel all over the country — fitting in trips around school runs and real life.
What caravan and vehicle do you travel in?
We tow a black 2025 Cadillac RV (the Ourea Royal Family) we've named Callie, behind a white Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Sahara set up for off-grid family touring.
Is the Cadillac RV good for families?
For our family of four it's been great — a 22ft layout with the room and off-grid power (400Ah lithium, 1000W solar) to camp comfortably with kids for days at a time. We share our honest, ongoing experience on the site.
Do you actually use the gear you recommend?
Yes — everything in our Gear section is kit we genuinely use and rate. Some links are Amazon affiliate links, so we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, but recommendations are always based on real use.
How can I get in touch or work with you?

What's your average fuel economy when towing?
Towing Callie — around 3,000kg tare and 3,500kg loaded (ATM) — the Land Cruiser 300 averages about 23–25 L/100km on the open road and highway. Unhitched the Cruiser is far thriftier, so the van adds a fair bit, which is normal for a rig this size. Headwinds, hills, dirt roads and higher speeds push it up; easing back to 90–95 km/h makes a real difference. We plan our fuel stops around that 25 L/100km figure and rarely get caught out.
